Many people apply it to thick, that includes depth. I say its good for 1/4". Once you get past that chances of cracking increase.
So do a small fill, let dry, and then add more after.

Never had any issue doing it that way.

The regular price is $44.98 with a savings of $9 per their own site. I agree with the other commenter that the expansion capability of this isn't the highest, but it works well for trim work and hole filling.

I've bought single tubes of Alex or Alex plus at under $3 per tube from HD or Menards. Not sure if this is a deal.

edit: didnt see the free caulk gun, but thats a lot of caulk
