The only metal I can think of that this sponge won't ruin is cast aluminum.

If you have stinky sponge issues, it may be the soap brand. Blue color Dawn has a chemical that makes sponges smell after a day or two.

I need a non-abrasive sponge that is not blue (to distinguish it from the dish sponge). Any suggestions?

I cannot speak for cast iron because I haven't tried it on there but I imagine it'd be safe for cast iron equally as cast aluminum.

A weak bleach solution does a very good job of keeping your sponges clean and fresh. I use about an ounce (eyeballing it) of bleach to about 25 oz of water in a quart sized deli container next to the sink. After you're done using the sponge, you rinse it out as you normally would, then just give it a quick dunk in the bleach water, ring it straight back into the bleach water container, and then give it one more quick rinse with tap water. Keeps my sponges smelling fresh until they start to fall apart from use (months).
Note, if you do this and your sponge seems to be deteriorating more quickly than usual, you've used too much bleach. It should smell kinda like the water in a hotel swimming pool.

FYI
Google AI: A strong bleach or chemical smell in a pool is actually caused by chloramines, not too much chlorine. These compounds form when chlorine reacts with contaminants like sweat, urine, oils, and dirt.

That's fair, I'm sure the approximately 1:25 bleach/water ratio I'm using is far stronger than chlorinated pool water, so it has a bleach smell before it reacts with anything. The point is, it only needs enough bleach to smell like (I guess very nasty) pool water, not so much that it's like BAM! BLEACH!
