It's plastic - so a lot depends on where you live.

I object to these being called "self-watering". It's not like they pull moisture from the air or even directly from a hose and magically water your plants just right. My automatic sprinklers are more "self-watering" than this is. I feel tricked having to even watch the video to see it simply helps regulate the watering you have to still do very manually and lot more of it then for example a drip system on a timer.

I've had these and others by this brand for about 4 years now and no issues. I also have the cedar ones from Costco that are 3 times as much and they are hot garbage.

I made mine self watering. I attached a small bucket to the side of it and drilled a hole in both and attached a small hose between the bucket and planter bottom. I put a swamp cooler float valve in the bucket and hooked it up to a hose so that it automatically fills when it gets low. Never have to touch after planting in the spring.

I prefer that over a drip system as my soil just seems to not be great for plants no matter how many bags of soil I add. I can get 5ft tall tomato plants with loads of tomatoes out of these where I get maybe 3 feet out of the ground and not very many tomatoes. Also much easier to weed and being off the ground I don't get as many weeds.

Keter is well known for strong plastics. I have 40 yr old storage units still in great condition in my patio.

I've had great experience with keter products. That said, I plugged one of these to retain water, went out of town and came back to a bathtub full of unhappy water logged plants...
