I eventually got fed up and bought a bunch of lithium-ion AA/AAA batteries from Costco (Coast brand, recently on sale) that seem more reliable, and have a lifetime warranty.
Also a reminder that for anything super important (e.g. CO detectors) never use rechargeable batteries, always use high-quality single use alkalines.
