The Fluke BK120 is a breaker finder and socket tester that stands out for clearer, more reliable tracing than cheaper Klein and Harbor Freight alternatives. It can narrow down the correct breaker, works well on mislabeled circuits, and also doubles as a non contact voltage detector. The kit is easier to use when the panel is not a wiring mess, and accessory adapters can help with light sockets or alligator clip connections. The main caution is that breaker tracing is not exact, so panel type and wiring can affect results and verification is still needed.

Common Questions (5)

  • The Fluke BK120 is reported to give a clearer signal and settle on one breaker, while the Klein ET310 can ring on multiple breakers or give unclear readings. It also does not need a learning pass and can double as a non-contact voltage detector.

  • It is not 100% reliable and can depend on panel type and wiring, especially in messy or unusual setups like shared neutrals or poorly labeled circuits. It still can narrow the breaker location, but you should verify before touching wires.

  • Cheaper options exist, including Harbor Freight's Circuit Detective and Amazon units around $20, but the BK120 is favored for clearer breaker identification and easier use. The tradeoff is price, so the value depends on how often you need accurate tracing and how much you want a better return policy from Home Depot.

  • Yes, it can save time when outlets are mislabeled or when a breaker controls unexpected rooms or floors. It is useful for documenting circuits and narrowing down the correct breaker before outlet swaps or other electrical work.

  • The BK120 can be paired with accessory kits that use alligator clips, and a simple Edison screw-in to outlet adapter can help when tracing a light socket. A 3-to-2 outlet adapter is also inexpensive if you need one.

how often do you check breakers to need something like this?
Bad light bulb or appliance/motor can trip breaker when energized. Perhaps 1-2 times in a decade. I simply unplug the device and flip the breaker back to the ON position to restore the power. No need to waste $ on any tool unless the breaker does not stay ON.

Very mixed reviews on this, may depend on the panel type or how it's wired. Going with Home Depot on this deal as the return policy is much better than Amazon.
I had a lot better results with this Fluke breaker finder than the Klein tools one. The Klein tools one required 2 passes over the panel, first a learning pass and then a detection pass. But it'd always beep on 3-4 different breakers on the 2nd pass. The Fluke doesn't need a learning pass and it'd always settle on one breaker after 2 passes. The Fluke also doubles as a non-contact voltage detector. I did like that the Klein tools one had built in storage for the transmitter though.

It is way better than the Klein, and that has great reviews. While the instructions are really straightforward, I would put many of the negative reviews down to user error.
Have the Klien and if the panel is not a spaghetti mess it works very well. I use it to track down mislabeled circuits labeled by licensed Union Electricians. The job was said to have been "done by Union Licensed Electricians" but probably some 80 year old licensed Union Electrician living g miles away signed off on the job for a fee. Go figure.

You have to do it the old fashioned way. Turn the light on, then have someone else flip the breakers until you find the right one.

I have the same issue with an outdoors light I want to replace.
Get an Edison screw in to outlet adapter. Screw it in to the bulb socket and plug in the tracer.

I'm at the age where my tolerance for purchasing cheap questionable tools is declining rapidly. Hopefully this is better than the $25 one I have in my electrical bag atm.

Confirmed. This Fluke is much better than the Kleen Tools version. Tested both side by side. Fluke gives clearer signal which only indicate one breaker vs multiple breakers like the Kleen Tool

I'm babysitting a house with aluminum wiring and shotgun-shell fuses. Power is off at the meter. There are very few circuits, all unlabeled. There is a hardwired pump with a control panel that I'd like to supply with external power. The control panel is on a post that is leaning over above a mud hole. It looks complicated. I'm wondering if there is a chance that there is an outlet on the same circuit that I can run a babykiller cord to. How much of a gamble is it that this, with an alligator clip adapter, will be reliable enough to definitively rule this out (or in)?

I bought one of these a year ago or so and returned it. Couldn't even remotely detect the correct breaker. Ended up just plugging in a light to each socket testing it that way and found that the readings from this Fluke were way off.
