Easier to create the bias voltage for the amplifier and have it high enough to drive the speaker. With that said, low power single-chip DC-DC converters aren't quite a dime a dozen but they are a dime or two at quantity. But it adds to the BOM in something intentionally built to be cheap (annoying) garbage.
