Haha, the cheaper flights aren't worth all the other... stuff. That's coming from a fellow former-southern California native.

On a deal note, New Zealand was awesome. We went in early 2025 and it was incredible. Auckland was cool, but Queenstown was even better. Make sure to spend some time on the southern island.

13 hours in a BE seat? I can't do it, and LAX is a terrible airport IMO. I'll do almost anything to avoid it.

How about some deals on premium economy or better yet business class?
Delta is doing some pretty aggressive deals periodically. We are headed to Australia in March and I booked my wife Delta One SLC-LAX-BNE for 100,000 miles. I can't remember the cash price, but that's a stellar deal for Delta One.

The return from Sydney-LAX was 17,000 miles in BE, 25k for Main Economy. Too bad Delta is incredibly stingy on allowing updates to Delta one from Economy.

I think 2 weeks is plenty of time. We managed to do NZ in about 9 days, but it felt a little rushed. If it helps, here was our itinerary:

Arrival in Auckland - 2 days stay visiting the city
4 Days in Queenstown - Milford Sound, river boating, exploring the town
Flew to Wellington - 1 day
Train from Welling to Auckland - 1 day
Auckland 3 more days - Hobbiton, beach, mud baths, etc.

We rented a car a lot in Auckland rather than do the bus tours. Also, for Milford Sound, if you can afford it, I would take the bus there, but then helicopter back. It was a long way roundtrip on a bus. It was comfortable, but just super long.

BE is a starting point. I did economy in one of my BE deals, upgrading to business polaris saving a little over 2k for a trip next month. This is why I hope people who see my BE deals will look at the prices for other cabins.

Of course every trip is ymmv

Haha I'm happy to stick my teenage kids in BE all day long. They just watch movies the whole way anyway. My wife, on the other hand...

We did it in 2 weeks, after 1 week on Fiji. Flew into Aukland, rented a car, drove to Rotorua and toured around there. Got a GORGEOUS sunny day at Hobbiton!!! Flew to Queenstown, stayed in Wanaka, hiked around. Did one of the highest bungee jumps in the world. Took a tour to Milford Sound. LOVE IT ALL!!

BE is fine if the traveler is short.
+1 if the flight is empty and you get the whole row to yourself!

+1 on taking a helicopter to AND from Milford Sound / Fjord. Its a really cool journey that way (especially if you do a glacier landing) and you don't burn most of your day in transit.

No, we went for 10 days and only saw a smidge of the North Island
