I know it comes with Win11 Pro which is an attractive value add, but these are actually fantastic Linux laptops. Fedora supports the trackpad and fingerprint reader and camera out of the box, and I'm sure other major distros do as well.

Yeah, you can. But then you're stuck using a Mac. 🤷

This ThinkPad T14 stands out as a compact business laptop with strong upgrade potential and broad Linux support. Fedora works out of the box with the trackpad, fingerprint reader, and camera, and the 2280 SSD slot plus DDR4 memory layout make storage and RAM upgrades straightforward. The Intel model uses Thunderbolt 4 ports, and the machine has proven solid for school and even Proxmox use. The main knocks are that it is about five years old, has no backlit keyboard, and the touchpad can feel laggy until settings are adjusted. A practical pick if you want ThinkPad durability without paying for a newer model.

Common Questions (5)

  • The Intel T14 Gen 2 configuration is either 16GB soldered or 8GB soldered plus an 8GB SODIMM, both DDR4. That means some units have an open memory slot for expansion, while others are fixed at 16GB.

    jbwhite99dtgolderSlickRailway7321

  • The touchpad can feel very laggy and sticky, especially for scrolling. Disabling double-finger tap to click in Windows Precision Touchpad settings reportedly fixes the issue.

    trpt4himLacosmo

  • No backlit keyboard is included on this unit. That matters if you type in low light, since you would need an external light source or a different configuration.

    PeterM1200

  • It uses a standard 2280 PCIe NVMe drive slot, likely PCIe Gen 3 and possibly Gen 4. That makes SSD replacement or upgrading straightforward with common M.2 2280 drives.

    jbwhite99

  • Fedora works out of the box with the trackpad, fingerprint reader, and camera. That makes it a practical Linux option if you want to avoid Windows 11 on this hardware.

I bought almost this exact laptop new over 3 years ago for $50 more. I'm surprised they're still selling this much. my kids liked it a lot and they barely stop using them in the last couple months for new laptops.

Unless it's direct from manufacturer, it's used. Therr is nothing actually refurbished on these units. They were wiped down and the HD was cleared.

Very solid little laptop. Use a comparable one for school and it handles everything I've thrown at it so far without issue

MacOS annoys me to no end but Windows 11 is getting worse all the time. Unlike every previous Windows release, 11 keeps going downhill with every feature release AND patch as Microsoft shoves in AI and what seems like vibe-code.

The P-core/E-core architecture starting with the Intel 12th gen needs Win 11 to handle workload scheduling correctly but you can install Windows 10 LTSC on this (check out Massgrave) without a performance hit if you're not willing to go MacOS or Linux.

I bought a mini pc with the i5 - 1135G7 and it's gpu is better than you may think. I bought it for emulation and it looks like it can do everything up to PS2 according to the youtube videos I watched. It can even do some of the next tier of games.
Its better with upscale 4k and new hd texture pack, ai enhancement too.

It has to say new battery and new parts for real professional refurbished. Or else false advertising, bait n switch

Certified used is 80% battery and used parts. The cheapest fale refurbished

I fixed the touchpad scrolling lag and stickiness by turning off the double finger tap to click (and single tap to click for good measure) in Windows Precision Touchpad Settings. It was aggravating until I discovered that fix.

I believe memory is soldered with AMD processors. If Intel (as this one) one bank is soldered, and the second bank is via a SODIMM slot...so this one SHOULD have 16 GB on board, and an open slot for another 16 GB. I'm running a T14 Gen 4 now, and that's how those are configured (and again I believe it's the same for Gen 2)
for AMD at that time it was soldered. For Intel, it was called "DIMM+Down". Now all is DIMM.
