I've heard of people just buying new ones and returning the defective ones as the recently bought controllers. The person I heard mention this said they don't check serials on controllers.
I've warrantied a quite a few Xbox controllers over the last few years. When they tell me it's only 90 days, I challenge them by saying something like "aren't warranties supposed to be 1 year?" and it has worked every time. They say they are doing it "as a courtesy" for me.
