Isobutane canisters can be recycled in mixed metal (typically not curbside). You just purge them by opening the stove valve all the way while inverted and then punch a hole in them with a big nail.
They were explicitly excluded from the disposable fuel canister ban as alternative backpacking stoves (tablet, white gas, alcohol, twiggy) are higher fire risk.
FWIW I resisted buying a jetboil for years because I convinced myself I didn't need one. Now that I've used mine on well over 500 camping trips, I could never go without one. They are best simply for boiling water, not for cooking in.
