New customers need to port a number.

1. Get a cheap/throwaway number from an MVNO/Google voice for porting.
2. Open the account with FI ( Get $60 credit by doing *unmentionable*) and order the phone.
3. Activate and port the number to FI and sign up for the cheapest $20 per month plan.
4. Stash the FI SIM away making sure not to put in any other phone and you can put your main carrier sim and start using the phone. Fi phones are factory unlocked.
5. Keep the FI plan active for 120 days. When the counter goes down to 0, you can pause/cancel the account.
6. Total cost should be $99 + $100 - $60 = $140

If you are planning to get S26 from FI next month don't do this deal as you can't do overlapping deals or you open up a Gmail and new FI account for S26 deals.

$99 + tax + $80 ($20 x 4 months) - $60 (rfrl code) = $119 + tax right?
Or if you want to be absolutely sure you get the full 120 days I guess you could pay for 5 months, for a total of $139

regardless, you probably should upgrade the price for the thread with full price.

Taxes and regulatory fees might add some more e.g. for me it's $3.5 on top of $20. If you are a. Existing customer or moving your number to FI for good then the services charges don't matter so that's why I put only the device price on the title.

I've seen worse phone deals than this get more love.

In any case, February is a lousy month to start because it's 28 days
can one wait until March so that 4 months will be 122 days?

Yeah, that's a good idea. As mentioned that should give you a chance to look at S26 deals as well but for that you have to be an existing customer. Fi takes 21 days or so to consider you an existing customer for the deals so if you want to get S26 on Feb 26th this is the time to signup for Fi.
