You've to take into account 2%(back on membership card) and 2%(back on credit card). Usually if you buy gold from anywhere else it would be more expensive...

4% is still $200 gain , but end of the day it's $100 more in Costco and not worth paying $300 more than market price If it's around $5000 it's a steal

If you are not buying large quantities of Good Delivery bars through the LME, don't expect to find someone selling you gold at spot. No retailer is currently selling 1oz coins lower than 5,100 (and that's if you pay by check/crypto, not credit card)

One can probably find these at spot right now at coin dealers. They basically stop buying gold due to volatility and how fast gold has shot up. Shop around and see if one can find a dealer wanting to dump. Just be aware that the current spread has widen to about 5% on the sell side. That's if one can find a local buyer.

How would you trust these coins are legit? Rolling gold on top of brass or copper is undetectable

If you are buying from a legitimate coin dealer, the big buyers should have a device that can discern the metal composition of the coin. They will place coin on it and and will flash if not gold. Costco's suppliers seems to be named large suppliers, should be okay.

I personally will never buy physical gold. The spread is like 5% now to sell. If one really wants to invest in gold, just buy the stock GLD, miminal commission.
