I'm flabbergasted that it's still an ultrasonic humidifier even though it's a heater too. What happened to the humidifiers with heating elements that put out all kinds of humidity?

They still make 'em. I have a "Vicks" branded one, package called it a Vaporizer Humidifier.
Puts out a lot of water and heat. It only puts out heat secondary to the vaporizer function, no way to use it as just a space heater.
