Most "traditional" refried beans have lard. Look for fat free or vegetarian to get it without.

I have two long time and very good Middle Eastern friends and they love pork. The ones you are talking about are Middle Easterners that practice Islam or Judaism. Many "Americanized" Middle easterners don't practice either.
