The threat they protect against—"digital pickpocketing" or RFID skimming—is almost non-existent in the real world. Here is the breakdown of why your cards are already safer than you might think.
​1. The Technology is Already Encrypted

​Modern contactless cards (the ones with the "wave" symbol) use EMV technology. Unlike the old magnetic strips that broadcast your actual card number, the chip creates a one-time unique code for every transaction.
  • ​If a thief "skimmed" your card while it was in your pocket, they would only get a useless, one-time code.
  • ​They would not get your name, your address, or the 3-digit CVV security code on the back.
​2. Skimming is "Theoretically Possible, Practically Rare"

​To scan your card, a thief would need to get an industrial-strength reader within a few inches of your pocket without you noticing.
  • ​The Reality: Financial experts and law enforcement (including the FBI and AARP) consistently report that there are virtually no documented cases of street-level RFID skimming leading to actual fraud.
  • ​The Real Danger: Digital thieves prefer much easier methods, like large-scale database hacks or "shimming" (placing a device inside a gas pump or ATM reader).
​3. Most "Chip" Cards Aren't Even RFID

​It's important to distinguish between the two types of chips:
  • ​Contact Chips: If you have to "dip" your card into a reader, it uses a contact chip. These have no radio frequency and cannot be scanned from a distance. An RFID wallet does nothing for these.
  • ​Contactless (Tap-to-Pay): Only these use RFID/NFC technology. Even then, your wallet's leather or fabric already provides a natural (though partial) dampening of the signal.
