There are pacing issues though, especially in many of the later books. He takes a Tolkienesque approach to breaking narratives into chunks of story. The problem is that Brooks will leave a narrative as a cliffhanger and then by the time you get back to it many pages later, you don't really care that much any more. Other authors do this weaving together of different narratives much more deftly. Brooks never really figured it out and so the books end up clunky.
This first trilogy is pretty good though and easily worth the $3.
