The Roku Streaming Stick HD is a simple, low cost way to add Roku streaming and voice remote control to an HDMI TV, especially for basic 1080p setups. It is praised for easy setup, a clean interface, ongoing app updates, and handy free content from Roku Channel, Tubi, PBS Kids, and Hoopla. It can also work well as an AirPlay receiver or a spare device for travel and projector use. Main limits are the HD resolution, no Dolby Vision or Dolby TrueHD passthrough, and privacy concerns around Roku data collection.

Common Questions (5)

  • It plugs into an HDMI port for video and uses the USB jack for 5V power. Newer sticks are commonly powered from the TV's USB port or an external adapter, while the HDMI connection carries the picture.

  • Yes. On a 1080p TV, the HD model delivers the same picture quality and app performance as the 4K model, and the stick will stream content at 1080p rather than 4K. The 4K upgrade only matters if you have a 4K/HDR display or plan to use 4K services.

  • Yes. At $16, it is cheaper than buying a replacement Roku remote, and it can be a practical upgrade from older sticks that lag or stop getting app updates. Older Roku devices have also continued receiving updates for years, which suggests decent longevity.

  • The 2025 4K Streaming Stick Plus does not support Dolby Vision, and this stick also lacks Dolby TrueHD passthrough. It can still play the content, but output may be limited to 1080p for that material.

  • The Roku voice remote is RF, not IR, so it is designed to work with a stick hidden behind the TV. It does not communicate with traditional IR-only receivers, but an add-on Sideclick remote can provide IR control if needed.

Does that mean it can't stream 4K at all?
It can still play the content, but at 1080p resolution.

I used to have one of these... I could hear a very faint whine coming from my remote, and realized whatever it was was draining my battery Frown

Are these better than using the built in interface on my Samsung Smart TV?
Anything is better than a built in TV interface.

Target as well, a bit slicker if you have RedCard.

How is onn in this regard?
It's also very weak when it comes to data privacy. They are slow, glitchy, loaded with bloatware, at least that's what my limited research tells me. I have never owned an Oon, myself, whereas I have owned many Roku devices, and seen how many thousands of attempts to phone home it makes per day because all the attempts were blocked and counted by my pi-hole server--so I could see the attempts with my own eyes. From what I see Oon is even worse.

Just jump on chatgpt if you want some quick info and prompt with something like:

"How do Roku, Firestick, Oon, Shield, and Apple TV compare in terms of data privacy and data harvesting for advertising and for sale to data brokers?"

Than dig in with some questions of your own. Be amazed.

That's why you should always add these and other IOT to your guest network, and run a Pihole too.
If you are running Rokus you are absolutely correct. That's exactly what I did when I had Rokus. IoT VLAN AND DNS blocking by pi-hole. I retired them all as a Christmas present to myself and many family members and replaced them with Apple TV devices. Bought six of them altogether--so I have a lot of Rokus up on the shelf collecting dust now.

Apply harvests all of your data as well, they just don't often sell it because in their business model, it is far more valuable for them to keep it to themselves (edit: based on news reports, it appears Roku makes the vast majority of their revenue by using user data for targeted advertising rather than any significant profit from selling data to data brokers). Even with Apple TV, the apps being accessed are harvesting streaming and searching data, and often selling it, and your TV itself may also be harvesting screenshots and other data. In many cases, you may be able to limit the collection or sharing of your personal data for commercial purposes, and so one of the most important things people can do is to go through the privacy settings for each device and service, rather than avoiding specific products.
I have seen nothing that indicates to me, including the monitoring of the devices on my own network, that indicates that Apple collects anything except the most basic information, and what they do collect, the do not share or sell. My TV itself had never accessed Internet. It was air-gapped but now I do have it on my LAN so I can view the various cameras I have on my property on the TV via rtsp streaming (All the cameras are also strictly local--no access to Internet/no subscriptions/no cloud storage).

Slick deal. This is cheaper than buying a replacement remote.
Last time there was a refurbished one for $7, I got it to be able to trigger my projector to turn on via home assistant. Good thing is the projector isn't smart enough to change the input. So it powers on, and I can watch without having to turn on via pj remote.

It's a good deal if the sticks have the longevity of the older devices, my Roku 2 is STILL getting updates and I'm sure it's 7 years old at this point

I've heard you can no longer turn these into a piracy stick. Is that true?
I don't know that you ever could with Roku. Are you thinking of the firestick?
