The Roku Streaming Stick HD is a simple, low cost way to add Roku streaming and voice remote control to an HDMI TV, especially for basic 1080p setups. It is praised for easy setup, a clean interface, ongoing app updates, and handy free content from Roku Channel, Tubi, PBS Kids, and Hoopla. It can also work well as an AirPlay receiver or a spare device for travel and projector use. Main limits are the HD resolution, no Dolby Vision or Dolby TrueHD passthrough, and privacy concerns around Roku data collection.

Common Questions (5)

  • It plugs into an HDMI port for video and uses the USB jack for 5V power. Newer sticks are commonly powered from the TV's USB port or an external adapter, while the HDMI connection carries the picture.

  • Yes. On a 1080p TV, the HD model delivers the same picture quality and app performance as the 4K model, and the stick will stream content at 1080p rather than 4K. The 4K upgrade only matters if you have a 4K/HDR display or plan to use 4K services.

  • Yes. At $16, it is cheaper than buying a replacement Roku remote, and it can be a practical upgrade from older sticks that lag or stop getting app updates. Older Roku devices have also continued receiving updates for years, which suggests decent longevity.

  • The 2025 4K Streaming Stick Plus does not support Dolby Vision, and this stick also lacks Dolby TrueHD passthrough. It can still play the content, but output may be limited to 1080p for that material.

  • The Roku voice remote is RF, not IR, so it is designed to work with a stick hidden behind the TV. It does not communicate with traditional IR-only receivers, but an add-on Sideclick remote can provide IR control if needed.

I have seen nothing that indicates to me, including the monitoring of the devices on my own network, that indicates that Apple collects anything except the most basic information, and what they do collect, the do not share or sell. My TV itself had never accessed Internet. It was air-gapped but now I do have it on my LAN so I can view the various cameras I have on my property on the TV via rtsp streaming (All the cameras are also strictly local--no access to Internet/no subscriptions/no cloud storage).
First you falsely claimed Roku makes most its revenue through selling data to data brokers, now you claim Apple doesn't collect and use its user data? I'm not sure where you are getting your information. but you need to find better sources.

Thanks for posting this OP Smilie .. I think this is close to the $15 it was on sale for at Black Friday Nov 2025.. someone jump in and correct me if I'm wrong but I believe this has a usb cable that plugs into the usb port on the TV to supply the roku stick with power.. I'm guessing most people are not using the usb port on their TV Smilie but it's something to keep in mind.

Completely off topic but I'm so tempted to buy one and just plug it into the TV at our neighborhood gym... our home owner's association is great in a lot of ways but I've been begging for over a month now for them to replace the non-working TV remote with no luck... honestly if I just plugged a roku stick in there and hooked it up to the wi-fi in the gym I don't think anyone would notice or care anyways Stick Out Tongue (surprising amount of free TV between the roku channel and say Tubi for example albeit with ads).

How effective is the Roku remote if the Roku stick is plugged in to a USB port which is located at the back of the TV?

Slick deal. This is cheaper than buying a replacement remote.

Roku makes most its revenue through selling data to data brokers. Truth.

Apple doesn't collect and use its user data. I did not say this. I said they make limited use of the data they collect. They do not sell it to third party brokers, which in effect means anyone may have your data.

Roku, like so many corporations now, monetize your private data without asking if you would like to opt in or out. Hell, they even charge you for it.

DO NOT buy a Roku if you care about protecting your privacy is the bottom line. Sorry if that fusses you. Actually--no, not sorry.

These remotes are not IR, they are RF. These are designed to work with the stick which is hidden behind the tv. This remote is currently $20 at Target. All IR remotes have the voice control feature.

Buyer Beware: There's a reason these devices are so cheap. They are bait. Roku's main source of revenue comes from harvesting your personal viewing data/habits (along with any other activity they can ingest from of devices on your home network), including screenshots, thousands of times per hour, and selling your data to data brokers--along with using it themselves to advertise to you. If privacy concerns you at all, get yourself an Apple TV streaming device. BTW--Firestick is even worse at violating your personal data.
Dumbest advice ever. Oooh Roku collects your data if you let them? Along with Apple and everyone else? Its a solid product with a great interface. They outdo everyone for simplicity and smooth operation.

Boo. Get the Roku, don't listen to the Apple overpriced smoke show. And learn how to turn off the data you share if you're worried about it.

I'm not sure why you are spreading this false information, but both Roku and Apple are publicly traded companies, and you can read about how they operate through their public reports, as well as through news reporting on their operations. Roku makes the majority of its revenue through selling ad space. That is not at all the same as selling data to data brokers.

Every company is harvesting data. What do I care about them harvesting my viewing data? Personally, I don't care.

If you are running Rokus you are absolutely correct. That's exactly what I did when I had Rokus. IoT VLAN AND DNS blocking by pi-hole. I retired them all as a Christmas present to myself and many family members and replaced them with Apple TV devices. Bought six of them altogether--so I have a lot of Rokus up on the shelf collecting dust now.
Sure, you trust Apple over Roku, your opinion is invalid.

Are these better than using the built in interface on my Samsung Smart TV?
I like the convenience of TV interfaces, but the reality is that they generally don't support them for very long after a TV is released, and IME you stop getting app updates (or TV updates, for that matter) in ~2 years. Roku so far has been updating things ongoing. I bought a second one lately literally to just watch hockey because the ESPN+ app on both my Hisense TV and PS5 are garbage (Hisense is all choppy, PS5 crashes every 5 mins). Swapped in the Roku and it's good to go.

It doesn't go into a USB port, it plugs into an HDMI port.
