I have some m12 stuff. Was told the m18 stuff was "too heavy" for easy use.

Poppycock. Get the m18 stuff. I've used it at friends places. More expensive but worth it on sale like this. Especially for non-pros/home DIYers

Some things are good for convenience ;tight spaces, weight, carrying around... Then there are times you need something bigger with more power... Both gets tasks done... This deal is better than what I seen today at home depot store, 399 without a third battery... This shows 399 for me
