My family travels a lot and we were nearly exclusive to Southwest before the policy changes. Now we avoid it whenever possible.

For all the pros and cons of old Southwest versus its competitors (more expensive than budget airlines, lower frills than big airlines, etc), the relative lack of mental hassle in booking a Southwest fare made it (usually) a no-brainer. We took a lot of trips we might not have taken just because the refund policy made us less hesitant to book travel. Now it's a tweener—all of the hassle of its competitors, but not as cheap as a budget airline or as nice / flexible as a big carrier. Why bother?

same as comment above, live in Southwest hub, use to fly decently often, now we avoid it whenever. They really got rid of all the reasons one would want to fly it

I was going to ask the same question. I assume "redemption reservation" means paying with points, but at no point during the reservation process do I see confirmation that this purchase will trigger the Companion Pass.
Had the same question too. Apparently flights booked with points qualify this time around, which is a first for this promotion as I recall them disqualifying the reservation on previous Companion Pass promotions.
Per The Points Guy:
"And it doesn't matter how you pay for your flight: Rapid Rewards point redemptions and Cash + Points bookings qualify as well, as long as you book through Southwest channels, such as the carrier's website or mobile app."

Man, I used to love Southwest because I'd just buy the business class ticket and then sit in the front row on the Isle. And since my shoulders are as wide as I am tall (5'6'', 210lbs but I'm a gym monster, 52'' chest) no one would EVER sit next to me. Even the last time I flew, the flight was sold out, every seat on the plane filled... except the middle one next to me and the girl that sat at the window. She was like "That was incredible, how did you do that" and my answer was "Well it's either be a fat 🍑, or get up at 4am to be an insane gym person; i choose the latter".

ANYWAY, screw Southwest. Guess I'm just buying first class on someone else from now on.
Holy cringe batman

They put "standard" ticket owner to the rear 30~40% seats randomly while the half front is almost empty. Moreover, you cannot change your seat even if the same "standard" area is empty. Since they fill the row first, instead of filling window first, then isle, middle last, you will see full row or empty row.
Are you telling me they will sit me and my family together even if I bought the cheapest ticket with no seat selection? What kind of madness is this!!!

What are they saving the premium seats for? People who paid for the premium? This is not the Merica I want to live in.

Would also like to know if there's any confirmation during booking that the companion pass has been earned?? Also, do we have to COMPLETE or JUST START the initial travel by 3/31? Sorry, I've never done these companion deals before nor do I have a reward account to check fine prints.

Yes, booking with points is eligible.

I earned a short term companion pass (Jan-Feb 2026) during a promotion late last year, and booked my flight using points (and I used my 2025 companion pass on that flight, too.)

To answer another question: I _never_ saw any confirmation that I met the terms of the promotion. The companion pass just showed up in my account this January.

Edit: You have to book between 2/2-2/5 for the promotion to count. Pre-existing reservations can be rebooked. I had booked a trip in February a couple of days before this promotion. I rebooked the flights yesterday for an extra 1K points. I figure it's worth $10 to get two months of companion pass later.

FYI, for those that want a new credit card too (for the baggage benefit or other benefits), there is now a new offer that opened up that requires a new personal SWA Chase credit card sign up. It is a (reduced) initial points bonus (from 20k-40k bonus depending on the card) after an initial spend requirement ($3k-$5k in 3 mos) and you also get a Companion Pass through 2/28/2027 (so for significantly longer!) for the new card sign up. That just released itself if that is more suited to your needs and you wanted a companion pass longer. Just an FYI for you.

Thanks for the FYI! I didn't know SWA Chase credit card holders still get the 1st checked bag free.

My weekly intra-california flights' fares all went up by $30. Round trip means I'm paying $60 for a companion pass that lasts a couple months when kids are in school. FAKE DEAL.

I booked a work trip and prices did seem higher, but I don't care. Not my money.

I had rebooked a trip I was going to take anyways and completed the trip last Friday. Got an email today confirming that I now have the companion pass. We had a planned trip for the family coming up in Sep so this worked out well. Found the cheapest same day roundtrip for $90 for wife to fly next month so she will have a companion pass as well.
