I've gotten practice shucking quite a few of these, and I find it to be pretty easy. Use a thin plastic tool to separate the seam and take it slow going around the perimeter. You should be using leverage but applying practically no force to separate the seam. Once you get it open, there's a sticker that needs to be untaped from the drive, then it'll slide right out of the internal SATA connector. If you get really nervous over tedious tasks, it might be a stressful ordeal. At least with these drives you don't need to tape any PINs to make then operate on a standard SATA port of a PC/Server. Once pulled from the enclosure, they are plug and play.

From keeping up with threads over the months, it's pretty much guaranteed to be a Barracuda. I ordered one because I'm desperate for bulk cold storage, and I missed the 26TB deal.

likely 5200 im assuming... tempting but not great for Desktop PC use imo. just got a 30% off WD via shopping cashback capone.. got my gold drive down to $12tb after that and student discount... fyi

They're likely to all be Barracuda HAMR drives at this point. Over a year ago, you could still get EXOs in them, but that supply is likely long gone. Have not heard of anyone getting anything, but Barracude drives in a loooong time. Mine included. I got two, a 20TB bought when the EXOs was still in them, and over the Holiday a 26TB.

Buy it now assuming they are Barracudas? Mine would be going in a 1U server and living in a datacenter. They wouldn't be storing anything important, so data loss would be a pain, not the end of the world. I'm more concerned about immediately voiding the warranty and the drives dying quickly.

It's definitely Barracuda but the consensus on /r/DataHoarder seems to be that this doesn't really mean much because they're functionally the same drives as Exos. They don't manufacture physically different drives at these capacities... they just bin them as either Exos or Barracuda for reasons that aren't quite clear.

But people on that sub still usually prefer paying a bit more for bare drives because then you're guaranteed some kind of warranty coverage, which is unlikely with shucked.
