This Ryobi 18V Whisper Series trimmer stands out for quiet operation, good balance, and enough power for edging, light grass, and regular suburban yard work. It reaches into beds well, accepts larger .095 line, and can run a whole front and side yard on an 8Ah battery or finish trimming with a 6Ah pack left for a blower. The main drawbacks are a delayed spin up on trigger press and a warranty repair process that can take a long time. It fits best as a lighter electric alternative to gas for routine trimming.
Common Questions (5)
Battery life can be enough to trim a whole front and side yard on an 8Ah pack, and one 4Ah battery can cover a suburban corner property. The same 6Ah battery can also be moved to a blower afterward without running out of charge.
It handles edging, light grass, and routine suburban trimming well, and can be strong enough to replace a 25cc gas trimmer for many yards. It is not the best choice for heavy overgrown areas that are left uncleared for long periods.
It is notably quieter than older Ryobi trimmers and is described as very quiet overall. The balance is good, but the trigger-to-bar position can take some getting used to and may cause fatigue until adjusted to.
A $30 Mass Save rebate is available on qualifying electric trimmers in some Massachusetts ZIP codes, which can drop the effective price significantly. One comment also notes the deal can become about $20 after rebate in Massachusetts.
It accepts larger .095 line, which is useful because the included string is considered weak. That makes it better suited to tougher trimming than the factory spool alone.
