The Harsh Reality
Juniper, Cisco, and HPE (Aruba) have all realized that they can't make enough money just selling hardware anymore-the "Walmart routers" have caught up too much in raw speed.
To keep their stock prices up, they shifted to the SaaS (Software as a Service) model. They took features that should be local to the hardware, locked them in a cloud vault, and told enterprises: "If you want the 'Blame Insurance' dashboard, pay us every year, or we turn the lights off."
It is the "John Deere" of networking. You bought the tractor, but you don't own the software that makes it run.
i turned it on december 30; im still in the trial period, which ends in march.
im reading now that after 90 days without a sub they can term your access, which i thought just meant to the cloud service. but if this is the price now, it must also mean your access to the network itself. eh, $20 tho?
my suspicion is that there's a future where you can flash these with new hardware and this price is a steal.

I had the opportunity to ask some Mist product people about the situation at an HPE partner event last week: "Will my un-paid Mist WiFi stop working?" The answer was along the lines of "as far as I can tell, we never block basic WiFi functionality, only the advanced extra cost features (location services, Marvis, etc.)"
In any case, I think both of these are true:
I paid $40 for my AP33s and $60 for my AP63s and I'm super happy with them.
At half the price, these are a steal.

I created my account back in September. There's a nag about licensing in the web UI now.
