Sometimes AI slop can be quite good;

The Harsh Reality

Juniper, Cisco, and HPE (Aruba) have all realized that they can't make enough money just selling hardware anymore-the "Walmart routers" have caught up too much in raw speed.

To keep their stock prices up, they shifted to the SaaS (Software as a Service) model. They took features that should be local to the hardware, locked them in a cloud vault, and told enterprises: "If you want the 'Blame Insurance' dashboard, pay us every year, or we turn the lights off."

It is the "John Deere" of networking. You bought the tractor, but you don't own the software that makes it run.

For one access point a yearly subscription. I maybe maybe could see a subscription for the whole network but not one device. F that.

I don't trust anything cloud managed. Once they get tired they can brick the product. It should all be locally managed.

i purchased the AP a while back for like $80 because it seemed that the network would continue to function even without a sub.

i turned it on december 30; im still in the trial period, which ends in march.

im reading now that after 90 days without a sub they can term your access, which i thought just meant to the cloud service. but if this is the price now, it must also mean your access to the network itself. eh, $20 tho?

my suspicion is that there's a future where you can flash these with new hardware and this price is a steal.

oh, and to power it you need some sort of router or switch that can do power over ethernet. i got one of these and it worked fine: YuanLey 5 Port Gigabit PoE switch from amz for $30.

I created my account back in September. There's a nag about licensing in the web UI now.

I had the opportunity to ask some Mist product people about the situation at an HPE partner event last week: "Will my un-paid Mist WiFi stop working?" The answer was along the lines of "as far as I can tell, we never block basic WiFi functionality, only the advanced extra cost features (location services, Marvis, etc.)"

In any case, I think both of these are true:
  • If they decide to enforce, traffic will still flow, but changes will be blocked.
  • You can always export your config and re-apply it in another account (scripts online to do this)

I paid $40 for my AP33s and $60 for my AP63s and I'm super happy with them.

At half the price, these are a steal.

I wouldn't call anything missing 6e a steal. It's still a black box for the data you are giving them too.
