After all, you are allowed to use the software and e-file your Federal Return (for FREE), up to FIVE times.
Heck, you could even pass the download link around to your friends and they could download the software and do their taxes. They just would not be able to e-file without the product code (XXXXX-XXXXX). They, technically, could do taxes, print them out and mail them in the old fashioned way and just pay postage.
Now, I'm just writing a possible scenario, I don't have the software or license in front of me to read the legalese.
The thing with H&R Block and the State version, is that somehow, someway, after you install the software on one computer, with one state...they put something deep in the registry that prevents you from installing another State's program on the original computer. I've tried in the past removing the program and re-installing and that did not work. I removed every instance of registry keys from the registry that involved H&R Block, re-installed, etc...and still could not re-install the software w/a second state. Another thing you could do, is back up your registry before installing the H&R Block software, install the software, do one set of taxes...remove the program, restore the registry from backup and re-install the software again...but that's a lot of work IMO.
VMWare is my Virtual Machine software of choice - it's free for personal use and is easy to build a 2nd VM.
Some of these tricks require a bit of nerd/geek basic skills so if they are beyond your comfort level...just order a 2nd download and get it done that way. Frankly, I don't know how a 2nd install would work on the same computer...you'd probably have to get on the phone w/H&R Block Technical support still, to get around the 2nd state install.

If I bought this, would the Nord renew my Standard plan or would I drop to Basic?
In any case, if anyone buys this for the tax software and wants to trade the Nord for Amazon GC, let me know.
Or, if you are slightly computer savvy, install a "Virtual Machine (or VM)" on your existing computer and do the 2nd state on the VM computer image. There are many video's that explain this process on YouTube.
If you want to make it easier to import your Federal info into the 2nd state; H&R Block easily allows you to back up your Federal return that you can import into the 2nd computer to then complete the 2nd State return.

I still need two copies though, right?

The representative in their online chat looked up my activation code and he said their system doesn't show an expiration date for the code, but he recommends activating it within 30 days.
Not exactly what I'd call a guarantee that it will be working in June, but you can wait until March at least. Maybe if you contact support and get a similar answer that might be reassuring enough that you can wait a while longer.
Sometimes digital redemption codes really do last a long time, several years ago I bought a bundle from Squaresoft that included Steam codes for some of their games and only activated the first game. I came across the codes again last month and tried adding the other games and the codes were all still valid.
