This Dell Tower Plus looks like a strong out of the box workstation and light gaming box, with the Core Ultra 7 265, 32GB of RAM, and RTX 5060 Ti making it appealing for photo editing, everyday pro work, and games like Overwatch or Valorant. The price also lands below rough parts estimates, and the case has room for extra SATA drives and an extra M.2 slot. The main drawbacks are Dell's proprietary motherboard, power supply, and case design, which make upgrades and repairs harder, plus the 8GB GPU and 460W PSU limit future headroom. A solid fit if the current configuration is enough.

Common Questions (5)

  • It is fine for the stock configuration, but it limits headroom for bigger GPU upgrades. Dell does offer a 1000W PSU option on this tower, and the 460W unit is the main reason people hesitate about long-term upgrade plans.

  • This configuration is the 8GB RTX 5060 Ti, not the 16GB model. The 16GB version exists separately, which is why several shoppers flagged the 8GB card as the main drawback.

  • Yes. The Ultra 7 265, 32GB RAM, and RTX 5060 Ti are strong enough for heavy Lightroom/Photoshop/DxO work and can game well enough, especially with DLSS. It is a better fit for pro workloads than an older laptop, but the 8GB GPU is the main limitation for more demanding gaming or future-proofing.

  • Some parts can be upgraded, including the GPU, RAM, SSD, CPU, Wi‑Fi card, and SATA storage. The motherboard and power supply are effectively proprietary, so major case/PSU swaps and some upgrades can be painful or expensive.

  • Yes. The system is reported to have three SATA slots, two hard drive bays, and room for additional SATA drives, plus an extra M.2 slot. One caveat is that this model may only support SATA drives up to 2TB.

let me guess, no SATA ports on the MB either.
I have a 9-year-old Dell XPS and it has been amazing.

I bought a refurbished one as a backup.

However, when I wanted to upgrade the cooling, I couldn't use an off-the-shelf upgrade, although Dell sold a better one as an upgrade, so I swapped that in.

Dell has done proprietary junk for years
460w doesn't sound like much.
I put a bigger PS than that in my XPS.

The 5060 uses 180w.

It doesn't sound like there is much room for upgrades.

They couldn't include a 5070?

Isn't that 40% more powerful, but just a little more expensive?

Should be perfect for that.

Three SATA slots [dell.com] and two hard drive bays [dell.com].
Where's the /like button?

I would totally hit it! Smilie

unfortunately RBG died in 2020
I wish.

I couldn't figure out what was wrong with my PC and didn't have the time to troubleshoot it in grad school, so I bought a Dell desktop from Costco.

It turns out that Inspirons are orders of magnitude worse than my trusty XPS.

I had all kinds of problems with it out of the box, needed to reinstall Windows once or twice, and I finally gave up and bought another PC.

The cursed thing woke up in the middle of the night and lit up our bedroom with I can only describe as disco inferno.

It woke up my wife and I and she suddenly had a migraine.

I finally found out there was a tiny button on top of the case to turn off the stupid childish lights.

Seems like a great deal to replace my 13 year old Dell 8700 i7 XPS, which has served me extremely well. Have used it just about every day since 2013. It's not Windows 11 compatible so it's time.
Have you used Win11?! Big Grin

I'm using my 9-year-old XPS right now and I like it so much, I bought a refurbished one as a backup.

If I needed to purchase a new PC, I would install win10 over it.

It comes with 2 years warranty.
Do their desktops freeze like their laptops do?

Dells are more difficult to work on for variety of reasons. I would pay 1.25x for a Lenovo of similar specs. I would pay 1.5x for a generic machine. That being said this computer is a deal

If Costco has the Lenovo PC with similar spec for $700 with a 5000 series GPU, that's a great deal.

Bought it - on paper its the best deal right now in this price point
It has locked up at least four times just trying to do data transfers
It can't stream Plex without stuttering, even though my scrawny work laptop can.
I was able to load Cyberpunk to just test and it defaulted to Ray Tracing Low and ran quiet as a mouse - probably because of the lack of fans. lol
Since I've been unable to transfer data from an external, even though I can transfer the same data on another PC, I'll be returning. Looking at the MSI at Costco for $1300 that's similarly spec'd without proprietary PSU.

Side note, I'm seeing open box Dells for $100 off at my local store - ymmv.

Unless Dell has changed their ways, the case, motherboard, and PSU will all be proprietary. In my mind, that knocks like $300+ off the value of this computer. I'm sure the memory in this will be the cheapest available on the market as well. That said, the CPU, video card, RAM, and SSD would probably cost you about $1000 to buy separately (however, you'd end up with higher quality components if you went this route), so I guess there's not much to lose here.

Edit: Nope, Dell hasn't changed their ways. Proprietary everything and no room for a longer graphics card.

if all someone needs is this build and only wishes to add additional SSD's or a HDD (which there is room for and cables for already), is this a decent deal?

that's concerning. do you think it was just a fluke or a chronic problem with this?
i was hoping for something that would work well right out of the box (hence not wanting to DIY - i did that in my previous life and now just want something prebuilt).

i did look at the Costco one. you get double the SSD size which is nice, but it's $300 more. on the Costco one, can you add additional SSD's or HDD's inside like you can with the Dell? i think the Dell has 3 cables already inside for add more drives which is what i was aiming to do

thx

I haven't opened the case to verify but others posted here that there is room for additional drives.
The Costco unit also comes with a 90 day return window and a 2yr warranty.
