You have to look at enlarged pics of bottom of all hiking and running shoes. I'm not impressed with treads on these.....Also, when most people walk / run, the outside of the heel hits the ground first. Therefore, outside heel is apt to wear out much quicker than rest of the tread. Better shoes, enhance the treads of the outside heel -- making shoes last much longer. I bought 4 pairs of Columbia hiking shoes about 4 years ago on clearance. The treads were very good and outside heel treads were enhanced. I do a lot of hiking and walking. Each of these shoes lasted close to a year. I cannot find any other Columbia hiking shoes like this anymore. I think they discontinued them because the treads (and the rest of the shoes) were made too well and the shoes lasted too long !!!
