We use these at my work to assemble gear boxes. They last a very long time being used every day. As a diy or even mechanic they should last you a decade or more under normal use.
Yeah, it's mainly about size and weight.

If you've got the P262, this is about 2" shorter and more than a pound lighter, which probably isn't a big deal unless you're using it a lot.
But if you've got the big high-torque, the weight and length difference is pretty significant.
This is a solid deal on a 3/8 stubby that is certainly great for every-day mechanic'n and everything in between. Highly recommended.
Just wanted to add my experience today when I went to pick up one locally:
I was having trouble actually finding this impact in the store, so I chose to just order 'for pickup' while I was standing in the store. Obviously a few moments after I ordered, a lady came to pull the order.
When she unlocked the cage below to pull the free 2AH battery, I noticed it was a single clamshell style package and extremely dusty.. and just thought to check the date code in the battery; it was actually date coded 2023, which of course gave me a moment of pause.
I then noticed behind the clamshell batteries were 'newer' models that were set to replace the old ones as they sold the old ones out. I simply asked the lady to please let me get one of the 'new' models.
The new models were in a box instead of plastic clamshell… and the new ones were dated 2025.
Also, the new 'updated' model has one of the small chargers in the box with them. (The ones that just attach to the stem of the battery?
The replacement model is listed as PBP003A.
TLDR: Check the model of battery they give you and try and ask for one of the 'newer' models that are in a box, as it comes with a charger and seems to be a lot fresher.
Ryobi's 3.8 inch HP compact impact wrench stands out as a small, light tool that still has enough punch for everyday car work and general mechanic use. It handles rust welded bolts, lug nuts, suspension and frame hardware, and even over 120 foot pounds on car bolts and nuts. The compact size makes it easier to maneuver than the 1.2 inch models, especially when weight and length matter. The main caution is that the 1.2 inch versions are better for the biggest lug nut jobs and stubborn axle nuts, and the included battery may vary in model and freshness.
DIYers and mechanics who want a compact 3/8" impact for frequent car work because it's far more compact and lighter than 1/2" models while still removing all their car bolts/nuts, including suspension/frame bolts over 120 ft-lbs.
Work users who need an impact wrench that can handle daily use because one commenter says they use these at work to assemble gear boxes and they last a very long time under normal use.
Shoppers who already own Ryobi ONE+ batteries and care about size/weight for repeated use because the 3/8" stubby is about 2" shorter and more than a pound lighter than the 1/2" option, which matters if you're using it a lot.
Car owners who expect it to handle every extremely stuck axle nut without extra tools because one commenter notes the only thing their 3/8" compact impact may not be able to do is remove an old rusty stuck axle nut (they use a breaker bar instead).
People who want a single impact wrench for everything in their garage because the 1/2" version is described as "a bit much for everything else," implying that if you're not doing lug nuts/suspension-type work, a larger setup may be overkill.
Buyers who might accept an older or dusty battery package without checking because a local pickup experience showed the included 2.0Ah battery was a single clamshell style and extremely dusty with a 2023 date code, and the commenter had to request a newer boxed model dated 2025 (PBP003A) that includes a small charger.
The 3/8" version is about 2 inches shorter and more than a pound lighter than the P262 1/2" model, making it easier to maneuver for frequent use. The 1/2" versions are better suited for lug nuts and heavier-duty work.
It can remove suspension and frame bolts over 120 ft-lbs and has worked on rust-welded bolts. An old rusty stuck axle nut may still need a breaker bar.
It has held up to daily use assembling gear boxes and is expected to last a decade or more under normal DIY or mechanic use. The compact size also makes it easier to use often than larger 1/2" impacts.
The newer boxed battery model PBP003A includes a small charger, while the older clamshell battery may not. It is worth checking the battery model and date code before accepting pickup, since older stock has been dated 2023 and newer replacements 2025.
I got the 1/2 brushless version during Christmas season. It's a bit heavy and takes up space, so a bit heafty tucking in the car in case you need to remove lug nuts on the side of the road.
my Ryobi 1/2 impact wrench can't even break 85 ft lb of torque. Anyone has experience with their warranty? Do you have to register your product within a certain time frame within purchase?
Don't know if anyone has answered you, but you can register your product anytime w/n the warranty period. It just needs to be registered before any warranty work can be done. I have had several batteries replaced under warranty.
Are you sure your 1/2" impact is bad and it's not your battery? I thought mine was dying because I'd pull the trigger and it would spin up for half a second then slow to a stop. Turns out it was the battery.

I'm tempted to jump on this deal, especially with the battery included.
I've been using the 1/2" version from Ryobi (model number P262) for a year or so and use it all the time when working on my cars. Works great for lug nuts and suspension work, but a bit much for everything else.
This works just fine for all my car's bolts/nuts, even suspension and frame bolts torqued to over 120 ft lbs. I have all 4 HP impact wrenches (HP 1/2" high torque impact, HP 1/2" model 262 impact, this HP 3/8" compact impact, and HP 1/4" impact driver) and I only use this HP 3/8" compact impact because it is far more compact, lighter, and easier to maneuver than any 1/2" model while still having the power to remove ALL of my car's bolts/nuts. I'm selling the HP 1/2" impact model 262 and HP 1/2" high torque impact because I have no use for them now that I have this 3/8" one that is powerful enough for any bolt/nut on my cars. The only thing this 3/8" one may not be able to do is remove an old rusty stuck axle nut, but I have a breaker bar for that so I'd rather recoup a few hundred dollars by selling these 1/2" impacts rather than have them lose value and sit unused on my shelf for years.

Thank you so much for the reply. It's the wrench. I have a few HP 4 Ah batteries that I keep charged at all time since we use the stick vac as well. It just won't open my lug nuts on my Miata.

Perfect timing as I have been looking for a good value impact wrench for some minor car maintenance stuff

Cost for the impact would be $52.13, and $46.67 for the battery..
The deal might be hackable.. YMMV
