Even the 12 pack on Amazon of the 30g shakes are $30 which is $2.50 each on a large pack size. $3.98 is not out of line for a single 42g bottle. Don't compare this to Premier Protein or OIKOS type protein shakes, different beast.

uh? Ensure, even the regular types aren't typically $1 a bottle. what are you talking about?
A 15 pack of Boost at Walmart is $24 which works out to $1.60 per bottle. Granted those are only 20g protein, yet general recommendations by experts is no more than 30g of protein per meal. The body can't store extra protein, any excess will be stored as fat in the body. Excess protein poses risk to the kidneys as well.
This amount of protein 42g for this brand seems more like a marketing gimmick to seniors!

also, the latest research seems to indicate that the body can digest greater amounts of protein than the 20-30g per meal thought - check out summary here:

again, Ensure is for people who can't eat solid food, it's supposed to be high in calories and fat. It's not meant for dieting. As I noted previously. totally different beasts.
as for some of the other comments directed my way. Of course I wouldn't have posted this deal if not for the Walmart cash, but the selling price of $3.98 is not out of line given it is a SINGLE bottle. Someone posted a multipack unit price of $1.50 on regular Ensure, of couse a large multipack is going to be much cheaper on a per unity basis. Sort of like going in and buying a single can of coke and paying $1.69 for one can when you can get a 12 pack on sale for $5.
