Right because it runs Vega OS but this one runs Android OS. And you can still run third party apps although a couple of them were banned earlier this year or later last year which is why some people are confused.

But yes on the Android version of the fire Stick not the select version you can still side load apps. Kodi, smart tube, whatever's

This Fire TV Stick 4K is mainly valued as a compact 4K streamer with Wi Fi 6, Dolby Vision, Dolby Atmos, and Alexa voice control, and it can also handle Xbox cloud gaming with Game Pass Ultimate. Kodi, Stremio, and other sideloaded apps still work for many setups, including Real Debrid and Plex, so it remains useful for third party streaming. The main caution is Amazon's tightening app blacklist and update pressure, which has already blocked some apps and may limit future sideloading. It is also only 8GB with micro USB power, so storage and long term flexibility are modest.

Common Questions (5)

  • Yes, the Android-based Fire TV Stick 4K can still sideload many third-party apps, including Kodi, SmartTube, Stremio, and app stores, though Amazon has blocked some apps tied to piracy or TOS violations. The Fire TV Stick 4K Select is the model that does not support sideloading.

    LivelyChicken8561LivelyChicken8561LivelyChicken8561spazz1233

  • This Woot unit is the 2nd-gen 2023 Fire TV Stick 4K, not the Select model, and it is below the 4K Max. The later Fire TV Stick 4K Plus rebrand is described as the same hardware with updated packaging and remote, while the Select uses Vega OS and Wi‑Fi 5.

    Wildcheetah123dust2ComoEstanPinchesbluekiwi

  • It can work well for Kodi, including Kodi with Real-Debrid, and it supports DTS:X and Dolby TrueHD passthrough. For Plex, DTS works, while DTS:X may downgrade to DTS depending on FireOS and Plex compatibility.

    JBGoldmandust2yazyazoo

  • It supports Xbox cloud gaming through Xbox Game Pass Ultimate, but it is not free and requires a Game Pass Ultimate subscription plus a Bluetooth game controller. Game Pass Essentials does not work for this.

    Wildcheetah123Snoodler

  • The listed Woot price is $22.99, and coupon code FIRE30 takes it to $16.09 before tax. Prime members get free shipping; otherwise shipping is $6 per order.

This is not true. I decided a whole bunch of third party apps on my fire Stick today. They did block a couple known ones that were said to be violating TOS over piracy or whatever and that's problematic. But everything else can still be sideloaded. Kodi, new pipe...the entire f-droid store. Smarttube, send tv to phone etc.

It still works for me. There was a few but apps that were blocked by Amazon because of some TOS violations but 99.9% of apps are still side loading fine. It is a little nerve-wracking that they started cracking down but as it stands right now you can side load smart tube and all the other goodies. I have entire third party app stores online that I just installed.

I don't think you're correct. I was able to put it on my old fire stick, but my VPN couldn't be loaded to it. The select fire stick is the one I believe can't be side loaded.
