This Fire TV Stick 4K is mainly valued as a compact 4K streamer with Wi Fi 6, Dolby Vision, Dolby Atmos, and Alexa voice control, and it can also handle Xbox cloud gaming with Game Pass Ultimate. Kodi, Stremio, and other sideloaded apps still work for many setups, including Real Debrid and Plex, so it remains useful for third party streaming. The main caution is Amazon's tightening app blacklist and update pressure, which has already blocked some apps and may limit future sideloading. It is also only 8GB with micro USB power, so storage and long term flexibility are modest.

Common Questions (5)

  • Yes, the Android-based Fire TV Stick 4K can still sideload many third-party apps, including Kodi, SmartTube, Stremio, and app stores, though Amazon has blocked some apps tied to piracy or TOS violations. The Fire TV Stick 4K Select is the model that does not support sideloading.

  • This Woot unit is the 2nd-gen 2023 Fire TV Stick 4K, not the Select model, and it is below the 4K Max. The later Fire TV Stick 4K Plus rebrand is described as the same hardware with updated packaging and remote, while the Select uses Vega OS and Wi‑Fi 5.

  • It can work well for Kodi, including Kodi with Real-Debrid, and it supports DTS:X and Dolby TrueHD passthrough. For Plex, DTS works, while DTS:X may downgrade to DTS depending on FireOS and Plex compatibility.

  • It supports Xbox cloud gaming through Xbox Game Pass Ultimate, but it is not free and requires a Game Pass Ultimate subscription plus a Bluetooth game controller. Game Pass Essentials does not work for this.

  • The listed Woot price is $22.99, and coupon code FIRE30 takes it to $16.09 before tax. Prime members get free shipping; otherwise shipping is $6 per order.

This is not true. I decided a whole bunch of third party apps on my fire Stick today. They did block a couple known ones that were said to be violating TOS over piracy or whatever and that's problematic. But everything else can still be sideloaded. Kodi, new pipe...the entire f-droid store. Smarttube, send tv to phone etc.
Give it time and those apps will be blocked also. Don't buy these to side load because it will eventually become useless. I have one and my third party apps are blocked. I stopped using it and will end up giving it away.

A more useful discussion would be this compared to the more expensive versions, e.g., one that has Wifi-6E instead of 6, why people would want each.

Stremio was not blocked, only some tv and movie apps. If you redownload them, they won't show on the homepage and you get a warning when trying to launch them. You can only delete them or have them take up space on your system
Ah I guess I thought by blocked they just meant not on the store anymore. That's too bad.

Kodi and real debrid is what I use, Zero issues.
Check out Stremio. Started using that (along with RD) a few years ago and never went back.

how do these compare to android types
It depends on whose ads you enjoy being shoved down your throat - Google's or Amazon's.

Amazon is particularly offensive - their hardware never stops trying to sell you endless trash you don't need or want. And while I'm sure this is massive coincidence 🙄, it seems like almost any show or movie I search for on there is only available to buy or rent.

You sure? I just set up a 2021 4k max for my nephew using kodi and downloaderAnd my 2023 4k cube still working right now.
Brand new units likely ship with vulnerable firmware (FireOS 7 ≤ PS7704 / FireOS 8 ≤ RS8149). An XDA exploit allows you to block updates and system apps to use a custom launcher. Important: Remember to block OTA domains on your router and set a download speed limit before powering on the device.
Don't confuse this with the Fire Stick 4K select (which comes with the WiFi 5); this model is far superior. It supports android app sideloading, Wi-Fi 6, Dolby Vision, and full audio passthrough (DTS:X and Dolby TrueHD). It's an unbeatable choice at this price. The exploit makes it even better by allowing me to remove Amazon's bloatware, freeing up RAM for a faster experience.

Just buy a Vseebox and forget about fire sticks. Gives you every movie and show on demand, plus pretty much every live US channel including all premium sports channels
I'm sorry, thats a $250+ device which is literally 10 times the cost of this device. I understand it has much better features, but this is called SlickDeals...

When you realize how much money you'll save cutting the cord, well worth the cost

Amazon is actively blocking 3rd party apps they deem to be enabling piracy. I got a rude awakening last night when attempting to watch the Super Bowl.
