Right because it runs Vega OS but this one runs Android OS. And you can still run third party apps although a couple of them were banned earlier this year or later last year which is why some people are confused.

But yes on the Android version of the fire Stick not the select version you can still side load apps. Kodi, smart tube, whatever's

So many options to beat the system but no step by step instructions on how to do it.

Does this help? It's from Amazon.com. You can use it as a baseline comparison.

A little bit but the Woot deal says it's the 2023 version and the table is for an item that says that it's the "newest model". Is there a newer model? What year is the "newest model"? What's the difference? It took 5 pages to even get some information that's halfway useful....

You can disable Amazon's app blacklist by using the exploit from XDA, so that you can install everything that you want. But it only works with the FireOS that updated before October 2025, if you buy the brand new one it will likely comes with the older FireOS which you can still using the exploit
Amazon forces system update upon initial setup before we can turn on adb debugging and the methods of blocking URL after you connect to your WiFi forces a reboot. It's a real shame I couldn't get the exploit because these were shipping with the old software since they're likely clearance stock for the original packaging from 2023. I recall 2024 they re-did box with recycled paper and threw in the updated remote (matte and flatter design) but practically the same with the ad-buttons probably different). Then late 2025 they simply re-branded this to be called the Plus, with the release of the Select (with VegaOS and WiFi 5). In other words, nothing has changed since 2023 except the remote and name. Worth noting if TrueHD and Atmos is important to you and your AVR/soundbar, these second gen 4K also do pass through (my Sonos reads Dolby MAT) to get the overhead channels working, in addition lossy Atmos from the big name streaming services. Until there's an alternative from Google to power their sticks directly from the usb on the tv these are my go to bang for your buck home theater winners, although it's worth noting Dolby vision profile 7 is unsupported on all -including the mighty shield pro but shield makes it compatible via "downconverting" to profile 8- except for the high-end corelec boxes.

I mention it in my reply below but on mobile so I couldn't multi-reply: this current one and this are the same except woot is clearance'ing their original stock before they updated the remote and recycled paper packaging then late last year changed the name to fire stick 4k plus. Ie, the internals and the stick itself are the same as the current gen

onn > roku > fire TV.
Roku don't let you side load the good apps.
Onn > fire stick > Roku

Absolutely do not do this.

Holy hell….WHY?

This thread is full of misinformation, but this is the top WORST.

Do not do this.

Get any Android TV device (Onn devices are the sweet spot at around $50 or less) and dedicate about 20-30 minutes of your time to sideload a few key apps.

Don't invite garbage malware devices into your home network while paying an additional $200-$300 on top of that. Pure insanity!
A bit of a over exaggeration. If you don't plan to side load third party apps the fires stick is fine. If you do onnn will work best. If you know how to repackage & insall APK files you can still run third party on firestick. This means manually updating side apps as needed. if you don't want to do anything techie like that then sure onn Google would be better.

Dude did you even read their post? They're recommending a $300-$400 device thats riddled with malware over this firestick.

C'mon now.

I just successfully set up two Fire Stick 4K Max with the exploit that arrived a few days ago. It takes some time to bypass the Amazon firmware updates but it really worth it.

First, I added the domain blacklist(for Amazon firmware update) to my router. Then, under the router's QoS settings, I set a download speed threshold for the Fire Stick (on my Asus router, this requires typing in the exact MAC address found on the box). I capped the speed at 1 Mbps so that the nearly 1 GB firmware update would take almost an hour to download.
Also, remember to deregister the device from your Amazon account; otherwise, it will use the stored Wi-Fi password to automatically connect.
After these preparations, you can turn on the Fire Stick and connect to Wi-Fi. You will see a screen showing 'Checking for updates.' At this moment, hold the Back button and Menu button (right next to the Home button) simultaneously on your remote. It will show the VoiceView prompt; click the Back button to exit and then sign in to your Amazon account.
It will take some time to reach the home screen. Once you see it, unplug the Ethernet cable from your router to stop the update completely, and then proceed to set up ADB following the XDA tutorial.

This is super helpful, rep'd! I was a little curious at the price as a fix for a TV lost to a remote leak, and this looks like a solution!

What do you think the odds of me resetting my stick to factory to try this would work? Or is the stick fully updated to the latest OS even upon factory reset?

If you don't mind, could you point me to where this exploit is on XDA. If you're unable to link it, could at least provide the title of the thread as it's posted on XDA so I can Google it. I would greatly appreciate it since I went ahead and purchased the Fire TV stick 4K from the OP.
