Right because it runs Vega OS but this one runs Android OS. And you can still run third party apps although a couple of them were banned earlier this year or later last year which is why some people are confused.

But yes on the Android version of the fire Stick not the select version you can still side load apps. Kodi, smart tube, whatever's

What do you think the odds of me resetting my stick to factory to try this would work? Or is the stick fully updated to the latest OS even upon factory reset?
If your Fire Stick has already taken the latest OS update, a factory reset will not downgrade it. You will remain on the latest firmware. This method only works with brand new units that ship with older, unpatched software.

Does this allow DTS and DTS HD passthrough on Plex?

Technically it supports DTSX and Dolby truehd passthrough. I tested it with kodi and my sound bar. For plex I can confirm DTS works, but there's a chance that DTSX will be downgrade to DTS, it's more like a FireOS and Plex compatible issue.

All this talk and no one has mentioned that this ONLY has 8gb Storage and about 1/2 is the OS... Firesticks with 8gb are useless if you are going Kodi on the device..

Also I would think you should all be concerned that for them to block and remove a app, they also know what you are loading on the stick.. Who knows what else they are looking at.. And they say we cant trust china boxes for that reason!

I would look to a Pi 4 or Pi5 and use the linage android os on them if you must use the 3rd party apps. At least Konstakang (linage creator) builds are community supported.

You could also run a android emulator on a old pc.

The idea is to STOP using these devices that no longer value your privacy. Show them they are only hurting themselves by voting with your wallet.

There are also the cheap china boxes. You dont have to go the $300 vesee boxes if you know what you are looking for. Cheap boxes and the clones of the not so cheap boxes ( same chips and remotes) often come with real networking ports, usb ports, and some have SD slots.. Why pay more and get less? Veesee could stop support at any point. A open Android os was what brought the interest in the devices. They are killing the reason they are popular.

Recognize that Hamerzon and Skrewgle are in the business of selling your data and selling you content. They are not in the business of letting you wreck the business model. In essence you do not own your fire or Chromecast device as you can not reprogram it to your liking. You are subsidizing their ability to sell you stuff and your bandwidth for advertizing.

I predict there will be generic boxes being sold in the future with a open bootloader. Something that supports the modern cpu's and say a 4gb/32gb ram and a ssd storage you provide. Something we had prior to the firestick first gen boxes with a modern os. I have noticed some temu generic boxes are available now, but I suspect it will mature a bit the more and more the screws are tightened on 3rd party apps.

As far as this deal.. Might as well get the $20 ONN box any day of the week. I have just giving up Firestinks.. I have gone ONN, but they will have the same issues if not now they will later.. It is best to plan accordingly.

There will be little advantage using a firestick going forward since you cant buy a tv with out some os on it. If the big guys lock down android boxes, why bother with them at all? Might as well buy the Apple box and be done with it.

Too bad ONN can't do DTS audio on Plex.
