This 4 pack of Tapo Matter dimmer switches is mainly appealing for app based lighting control and easy scheduling, with Matter over Wi Fi and a familiar Tapo app. The switches are reported to work well with LED recessed lights, and the dimming control has been solid for some installs. The main limits are that these are 2.4 gigahertz only, do not support true hard wired 3 way switching, and some lights may not be dimmer compatible. The bottom only tap control also takes some getting used to, making it a practical smart switch option if your wiring and bulbs fit.

  • The Tapo app makes scheduling lights to turn on and off easy after installation.

  • Some installations have worked without random disconnects or reconnect failures over time.

  • The switches can be programmed to behave like a three-way setup by triggering another switch or device.

  • The dimmer can control multiple recessed can LED lights without flickering in at least one setup.

  • The dimmer uses Matter over Wi‑Fi, which can matter for buyers avoiding Thread.

  • These dimmer switches do not support traditional hard-wired 3-way switching behavior.

  • Second-location control may require consolidating into a single switch and using phone or smart assistant.

  • The dimmer relies on Wi‑Fi for smart actions, so it may not function like a traditional 3-way setup during outages.

  • The dimmer may not be compatible with every existing LED bulb, so some lights may need replacement.

I like these, have a bunch. I wish they supported 5 gig wi-fi (2.4 only), but otherwise no complaints.

These do not support 3 way switching. They do exist from Tapo, but they are more expensive than these.
Yes these will support a form of three way switching. One switch can be programmed to turn on another switch or device making it work like a three way switch

I had the discontinued Belkin Wemo stopped supporting.

Are these supporting 3-way (controlling/turning On/Off 2 different switches in 2 different locations such as: Garage and Patio and/or Up stair/Down-stair) ?
Yes and no. You can use smart actions to make one switch turn others on or off in different spots, but it relies on wifi. You'll have to program each switch individually as a trigger to make it work from every side, but technically you can add as many "ways" as you want. You can even install a smart switch that connects to no load at all to use as a satellite switch, but that requires an existing neutral wire in the box to power the switch itself, which may be missing if you have old wiring or one of your existing three way switches doesn't have neutral.

Just keep in mind it isn't exactly the same as a traditional 3-way setup. The switches aren't hard-wired to the same load, so it won't work if your wifi goes down, though using a local Matter hub can keep things running even if your actual internet is out (you will need separate programming other than the smart action in tapo app for this to work). Tapo does sell a 3-way smart dimmer kit that handles this better, but it's not cheap.

Thanks for the detail info.

What I meant by 3-way is the neutral wire (white color I think) that comes with the switch in order for it to work and the 3-way is always is always more expensive than the model without it.

I had both models without and with 3-way switches from Belkin and Wemo. I was an early adopter and had those original switches like 10 years ago or so (they did not have 3-way smart switch back then before the 3-way switch came out later).

So Tapo owns by TP-Link now?

Who owned it before and it was Kasa ?

Who own smart switches from D-Link and some other smart switches/plugs devices by Amazon (When they had bundle sell with smart devices/light bulbs, etc.) which I bought and collecting dust somewhere in the house and not sure if they are still working and supported!

I hate to have tons of devices that in one ecosystem then the company stops supporting them after a while such as Google Nest (earlier generation of Thermostat) and now Wemo from Belkin (stopped working by Jan 31 which I re-set up most of them with Apple Home (some very old ones I could not set up since no codes to scan, etc.) but the Google Home linked to the Wemo apps didn't carry over and so some the old Wemo devices from Belkin stopped working completely and are bricks now!).

Hope this won't happy with Tapo ? at least in the new future 5-10 more years down the road.

right, the single-pole ones here only achieve 3-way function over network.
sounds like you are looking for tapo S515 (non-dimmer). You only need one of those to replace a single switch in your existing 3-way or 4-way setup to make it smart, so it should replace your wemo switches. If you want dimming, you'd need the S515D kit, which must replace both ends with the included master and satellite switches (the master needs a neutral wire, but the satellite doesn't).
btw, a neutral wire is generally required for most smart switches (single-pole or 3-way). There are premium no-neutral options like Lutron Caseta, but they definitely cost more. I thought, by the additional wire for 3-way switches, you mean the traveller wire?

Tapo and Kasa are both tplink product lines. Kasa was originally for North America and Tapo for Europe/Asia, but they've been merging lately. D-Link is a totally separate company.

I totally get the frustration with companies dropping support. You should look for Matter-compatible devices (Tapo or other brands) and set them up via Matter so they work locally across brands without the cloud. other local protocols like zigbee or zwave is also an option. Otherwise, Lutron if you have the budget, or you could look into Home Assistant stuff (you might be able to bring your wemo and nest devices back to life if you are willing to mess with it).

Unless I'm not aware of something, there is not much, if any, upside to using 5ghz WiFi on a smart switch, or most IoT devices for that matter. They don't benefit from the faster speeds since they use so little data, and 5ghz will just limit your range more compared to 2.4ghz.

I installed these a few months ago and I really like the app and specifically how easy it is to schedule the lights to turn on and off.

I have some of the non-dimmer models. Not a fan. Will randomly disconnect and not able to reconnect. Physical button wouldn't work wither. Even cutting power did nothing. At the time it was a known issue. It's been a couple years now and I have since removed them, but something you might want to look into.

The switches were on my IoT VLAN. Don't think it played a role, but maybe?
I have had 4 of these for about a year and they have worked perfectly since installation and have never disconnected.
