does anyone know how much it costs if you have to file 2 different states?
$20, you pay through the software.

I have been using this software for years now. I followed the dummy propts as it walked me through each and every question this year. When I was done, It showed I was getting about half what I usually get. I started from scratch and triple checked every form, every question and came out with an even lower return.
I wanted someone to show me why as I am not in a different tax bracket or anything else. I took it to an actual HandR block place. It was supposed to be free as a "second look" or whatever they call it but it ended up costing $400. That sucked but they fixed the return and I got 5 grand more than the software was going to give me. The lady working there told me I would have been better off doing it free online and then pay to file.
Bottom line is.. this is the last year I will be using H and R block. 25 bucks on crap software that ended up costing me even more.
Not to mention, the "Professional" who does your taxes at a brick and mortar usually takes a quick training course and uses pretty much the same software you are looking at here. I USED to pay a "tax preparer" to do my taxes... Then I realized they were just reading prompts from a computer screen, and I thought to myself "I CAN DO THAT!" I've been doing my own taxes ever since (Early 90's). And I agree with JL5's comment, bounce your results off a couple of different sources if you are unsure.

Amazing. I think that, when they told me it would cost $400, I would have gone to a good CPA instead. I'd want him writing the letters in case the IRS wants another look.

I also think the software is screwy this year. I am doing CA, and it no longer tells you to include 1099-R to the return if it has state withholdings (which HRB knows about because they deducted it). It also has big words on the CA return 'do not attach fed return' BUT according to CA 540 instructions, because I have schedules & forms other than A & B, I need to attach fed return! OMG, these are basic things, I can't understand why the software is getting it wrong.

I have used this software for over 10 years. This year I have documents to import from Merrill Lynch and the software couldn't find the institution on their list. When I contacted their help, the only way to import from Merrill Lynch was to use the online version and not the software. While working with their help agent, I created a new return online and tried to race through to the point that I could import the software but it didn't work. I told him it didn't work and he said if you follow the steps I posted it will work (effing moron). Then I decided to just try to finish it online but once you have started you can't start over and import last year's taxes. This is just insane. Apparently I'll be switching over to TurboTax.
