There's a myriad of reasons why you'd put an NVMe drive in a USB enclosure: extra storage for a system with no free slots, cloning a drive, recovering data, wiping drives, etc.

Wouldn't these negate some of the speeds that are a benefit to an NVMe drive? I thought the purpose of these was to be directly linked to the CPU for fastest speeds and transfers.

So yes but if you have a spare/extra nvme or are doing something that requires faster then sata SSD transfer rates these are pretty good.

Yes you loose some speed but using an NVME drive as a portable drive means you have much less of a worry about damaging the drive. NVME are solid state drives unlike old school HDD which when used as a USB drive can be easily damaged if they are dopped or otherwise banged around. NVME drives are very durable. USB drives are great for locking away files you don't want your wife to see be it your bitcoin wallet or your feet pics!

I have one of these and it's excellent for people who are tired of flash drives that fail all the time and are seeking more reliable portable storage solutions.

I wouldn't trust this over any other nvme enclosure that doesn't have the screen or any other unnecessary tech.
There is a UGREEN and Sabrent brand model nvme enclosure for ~$24 or less on Amazon that I would buy over this. Unless you specifically actually need to see transfer data on the enclosure itself for some reason, I would get either of those instead.

I would skip this enclosure for most of those reasons. This one doesn't support SATA and you'll want one that does for tech work.

'Permanent file storage' isn't really a thing. What you should focus on for things like precious photos or important documents is having them backed up in at least two different locations or drives at the minimum, and routinely checking both sources for any failures so you can replace as needed. In other words, if one of your backup options fails, you can make a new duplicate off of your second backup, and should do so ASAP, so everything is always backed up in a minimum of two places.

And of course, two is the minimum, but the more backup sources you have the better chances that your data will be protected, but, as long as you are routinely checking on them, it would be unlikely for two sources to fail at the exact same time. Exception of course is if it's two physical backups that are stored in the same location, which would both be lost in the event of something like a fire/flood/natural disaster.

I personally like to keep two physical backups and a cloud backup for any of my important photos/documents, as I can be fairly certain they will be safe and accessible, even if 1-2 of my sources fail or are otherwise destroyed.

As far as the item in the post, it could definitely count as one of your backup sources once you add an NVMe Drive, but definitely have a second or third backup as well.

I'm sorry. I probably should have been more clear. I meant an nvme drive in any enclosure, not specifically this one.

Thanks for bringing up that confusing point as I don't want to mislead anyone.
