Or maybe the work around is just esim activate it and get the imei from outside box?
I guess it does make sense it needs to connect to tmobile network at some point to unlock after 24mo.
You do not have to activate it but can you sell it as a locked phone? What happens if you sell or gift it to someone who activates it on their own t-mobile account? Do you keep getting the credits? Will it unlock for the other person?
If you trade it into apple or some other place will you still be getting the monthly credits?

If I don't activate the pixel on my account, can I use it as a trade in on a different carrier before the 24 months are over and still get the credits every month on t-mobile? Can I sell it as locked and still receive the credits? Give it to a friend on t-mobile to use with their account? Not planning to but always good to know my options. Thanks again.
I called the tmobile Costco number 3 separate times and was able to complete the offer 3 times for 3 upgrades.
Traded in on old LG flip phone, a cheap Xiaomi phone and an ancient ZTE phone. All worthless phones with wacky IMEI numbers.
I am on One plan.
