Would this have the newer, more tame vibration motor or the traditional rip your gums out old school motor? Does anyone know what the minimum model you need to get the latter motor?

So I don't think this is the one for you!

Without having actual insight to new vs old motor, looks like the 4100 has no vibration complaints. It has 2 intensity settings and a pressure sensor.

After 25 years of using Sonicare toothbrushes, I feel pretty confident in saying that the budget models are not made very well. By that I mean that they fail, usually with the metal post that holds the brush head becoming detached internally from the handle, within a year. I have had one of the cheap Sonicares-model 4100-fail 4 times in a row while still under the 1 year warranty. Sonicare finally sent me a top-of-the-line model 7500 to replace the model 4100 that consistently failed. I am still using the model 7500 four years later with no problems at all. It might be worth the investment. Your dental health is important if you value quality-of-life as you age!

These are junk now. Even the 4100 isn't worth it.

There are YouTube videos to fix it. Needs thread locker (locktite) and maybe half an hour of your time if you're inclined to fix the brush head
