I don't really understand why folks would pay this much for a several years old phone without the battery being replaced first.

They can be replaced by Apple techs, and occasionally by 3rd parties. But with this being 3 years old or about, battery is likely 60-85% range. Apple batteries don't seem to last long for some reason.

Agree. But it still doesn't make a lot of sense if you can get a new 16e for 30 bucks more and full software support for the next 7-8 years.

Depends on the renewed process.

I recently send in my M1 ipad to get the screen replaced, and the refurbished ipad they sent via express replacement had a new battery with 100% capacity.
