Medium bags have their uses, such like one week travel. If you gonna carry a full size luggage close to 50 lbs (or higher) you don't want one with zipper anyway
"Lost" 50 bucks after purchase during black Friday.
I agree; even the three-piece deal last month (January) was better than Black Friday.However, I've been traveling internationally with this model for years and it has still held up well. The outer shell can get scuffed up easily and become noticeable if it's a lighter color.

They're good for European air travel where you're limited to 44 lbs. Plus, if you're a proficient packer, you can still fit plenty of weight in a smaller bag, but it'll be easier to maneuver. I don't like using the larger bags unless I absolutely need the room.
What's the lowest price these been? Do they go on sale often?
This is one of the lower (maybe lowest?) prices I've seen for this set, but I would call it lukewarm given the 28" / 20" combo is on sale at the same price. As pointed out previously in this thread, 24" luggage doesn't maximize your checked bag size and is too big to carry on. I own a 24" bag and there are definitely times I use it, but if you're only going to own two pieces of luggage...IMO get a 20" and 28" because that gives you maximum flexibility with how much you can check.
