Stupid question maybe, but for a shorter fishing rod to keep in the trunk if the car, would this be a decent option? Too hard to cast? I would never use it for ice fishing.

A regular 2-piece rod would take up the same amount of space in your truck and work better.
I got this, but not for ice fishing. A while back there was a short rod/reel posted for use in boats (kayaks in my case), got one but it was out of stock after the first one. A short rod is handy for a small craft where you don't need to cast as far.

They sell larger telescoping pole/reel combos that are pretty good for around $30+. I take one in my backback when I go on bike rides.

This one is left handed. No right handed option available
It's actually lasted on Amazon as ambidextrous as all that's needed to change to left handed is remove the reel handle and switch it to the other side of the reel.

As others have mentioned, modern 2+ piece rods are much better in almost every situation.
