I did some research first about the layers and material used in the North Face jacket which matches my Columbia example because it still seemed outrageous. You made an actually dumb point Wink

Possible, but I have never had a piece of North Face gear wear out on me. I just skied this weekend with my North Face jacket I have been wearing for years. I started thinking about getting a new one, just for a different style and looked at the tag to see how old the jack actually was. It is 20 years old and looks almost new. I've got several fleeces and other jackets that are the same way. I'm not saying the MSRP is worth it, I always buy on sale, but in my experience the quality is there in the material vs a Columbia jacket that gets sold at Kohls.
