The backstory on the actors is actually extremely interesting.

Robert Clary, who played LeBeau was an actual Holocaust survivor. Lost almost all of his family.

John Banner (Schultz) and Klemperer (Klink) left Austria and Germany during the ascent of Nazism.

Trivia note: The drums in the theme song were played by Crane (Hogan).

Hogan's Heroes was shot on 35mm film, not videotaped---it can absolutely be high definition, and the Blu-Ray disc will look far better than DVD (which can only present low definition).

The limitation is based on the source material. So as long as someone can get ahold of the original film, they can churn out true 1080 or possibly even 4K versions. This is why old movies can be turned into incredible high definition presentations--they were shot on film.

Many sitcoms from the 1960s onward were videotaped on analog tapes that were limited to NTSC standard (525 lines of resolution, which is not high def), so they're probably always going to look like crap. Perfect for DVD.

I saw Corporal Louis LeBeau walking one day. He seemed to value his privacy and I went on my way.

It's great to see the older TV shows get the Blu-ray treatment and not be stuck on DVD forever.

I'm still waiting for Petticoat Junction to be put out on DVD. Only the first 3 seasons are. The rest are only available on VHS. You can notice the quality difference if your watch them on YouTube.

it is not about dvd or blueray... it is about digitalizing the information. The sad part is that it is not filmed in high resolution and no type of disc will change that.

BlueRay just holds alot more info, so less DVD needed for entire season. But the real question is... do more people have BlueRay or DVD.

In 2025 and 2026, there has been a notable surge in physical media sales (up roughly 15% year-over-year) driven by "streaming fatigue." Consumers are increasingly frustrated by:

Content "Purges": Streaming services removing titles for tax write-offs or licensing shifts.

Rising Costs: Ad-free tiers of major services now costing significantly more than a single used Blu-ray.

Digital Fragility: The realization that "purchasing" a digital movie is actually just a long-term rental that can be revoked.

ME, personally... I would never spend a penny on media cause it is FREE if you know where to look.

More interesting stuff about Crane than could even fit in a comment here, too:

The bluray edition has been available for years. Just in germany. That's where I got mine. Looks great. Anyone else think Ryan Reynolds would make a great modern-day hogan?

I made the mistake of giving my complete set of Universal Studios Rockford Files DVDs to Goodwill and bought the Mill Creek Entertainment Blu-ray's. What a mistake, no subtitles, missing scenes, poor transfer. I could've just upscaled my DVDs using my 4k player and it would've been better.
This appears to be from the studio so it most certainly is better than the Mill Creek releases but my point is Blu-ray isn't always better if you have a good upscaler.
That being said, Hogans Heroes is fantastic. I watched the crap out of this in my youth. Every day after school.
