Balatro is a highly addictive poker roguelike that works especially well as a mobile time killer, with runs that can disappear during a commute, flight, or waiting room. The card and joker combos, engine building strategy, and rearranging jokers before each hand make it feel deep and satisfying, and the paid version avoids ads. A major update with new content is coming soon, and the game is available for $6.99 on both iOS and Android. The main drawback is the lack of cross save or progress syncing between platforms, which makes switching devices a hassle.

Common Questions (4)

  • It plays like a fast roguelike deckbuilder where you build broken Joker combos, rearrange Jokers before hands, and chase score targets across boss blinds. That loop makes it easy to jump in for a few minutes and then lose hours.

  • No cross-save or cross-cloud progress sync is available between platforms, including mobile, Steam, and Apple Arcade. Unlocks and save progress stay tied to the platform you bought it on, so switching devices means starting a separate instance.

  • A major 1.1 update is reportedly coming soon, with teasers already showing a new banana plus changes to Matador and Wild Cards. Another larger content update is also expected in the next few months.

  • Yes, Balatro is available on Apple Arcade, so subscribers can play it there without buying the App Store version. The Arcade copy still does not sync progress with the non-Arcade edition.

Is this a "buy now understand later" situation? I've heard so much about this, but outside Solitaire, not much of a fan of card games.
Possibly, but look at it this way. It's seven bucks. How many things in your life do you buy that are gone in a couple of minutes like a burger or a coffee that cost around seven bucks? There are a lot of people (myself included) who love this game. You may not, and that's ok. But it's seven bucks. Try it. What's the worst that can happen?

They've been promising an update is around the corner for a year now. The game gets stale.

I couldn't get into this game, just seemed quite random and not very strategic once you get past the basics

Just bought myself a copy. Fair warning to anyone whose phone is rooted and attempting to buy this game: the Play Store will throw up a warning that your device is "incompatible" or "not eligible" to install the app, preventing you from making a purchase. Luckily, out of all 3x active Android phones I use, only one of them is not rooted which I was forced to use in order to purchase the game. Bottom line, it's a false positive.

Maybe "they" is their preferred pronoun 😉

after clicking buy, realized it's available for free on apple arcade. so if anyone has subscription to apple arcade+ save your $7 and get it from there. I will be requesting refund for my purchase.

"Why pay to OWN something at a discount when you can continue to rent a game that will vanish from your library when you stop renewing the subscription?"

They being PlayStack, the company your solitary developer set up to profit off a game they claimed at one point to support with updates.

No way, localThunk is profiting off the game?? Unbelievable! (also, he didn't set up the PlayStack, they existed before the game was made)
Great game, I just got an iPad and I might buy it there so I can play in a bigger screen than my android, sucks that saves and progress can't be synced.
