It only has 1 base mount hold down lever to stop it from swivelling and to hold it down to the orange base plate so that is a very weak point that tends to break if you do any amount of hammering on the little flat anvil portion of the vise, or any amount of hammering on anything held in the jaws of this vise. A 4" Harbor Freight vice is actually significantly better designed and is more durable than this one. I have one that I got on sale for $18 a year ago and have done some pretty heavy hammering on it with a 3lb mallet to ovalize 14 steel nuts for my M12x40mm bolts that connect my car's exhaust pieces and it didn't hurt the HarborFreight vice at all. It is very likely it would have bent if my vice only had a single hold down with the amount of force I was applying on it and to it as I've messed up a 4" vice in the past by forgetting to tighten 1 of the 2 hold down levers before hammering on it.

That's what happens when you strike a device not meant for striking. Those anvils aren't meant for beating things.

Sure, they go to the work of machining them for strictly cosmetic reasons.

You're actually closer to being correct than you realize. They're meant for insignificant, lightweight work. Many times they're put there so you don't hammer right on the curved part of the vise. But really, seriously -- one shouldn't be hammering on a holding device anyways, it's common sense.

It's like "don't use a screwdriver as a pry bar". Sure, you can. And people do. But you'll destroy any gripping strength with the tip WHILE using a pretty low-quality pry bar. So don't be surprised when your MADE IN -foreign country with cheap metal- vise/screwdriver falls apart after one or two good whacks.
