Good deal but this is pretty rough stuff. Not for finish work.

I assume this would be too coarse for stripping rust off a cast iron skillet??

Would this be good for taking the rust off of metal ski edges without damaging the bases?

With any type of product which removes stuff, always go lower then you think on anything like a metal or a soft wood. So if you think #1 will do it, get 0 and 1, start with 0 and see how it works. ALWAYS START IN AN INCONSPICUOUS AREA - doing a small section.
Steel wool has other uses as well. It will rust. Use half a pad at most unless you are working on a very large area, and wear gloves with the more coarse stuff. I don't know how you would hurt a cast iron pan with #1 over #0, but maybe you remove some of your oil coated based - can't remember the term for the baked in oils in the metals. Maybe you could use it lightly and not grind it out.

Better to get a variety pack and start with a finer wool and go coarser if required.

Chainmail scrubbers work well to strip cast iron pans

If you get this stuff wet, it will flash rust and cause a mess on wood. Also, wear gloves, do not let the dust from this contaminate your product, wiping cloths or finishes.

Yes it should work fine cleaning cast iron. Remember you need to reseason if you are too aggressive.

If it is rusted, then you need to season anyways.
