they were thinking SteelBook and a reason to re-buy the 3 year old Collector's Edition. Which is still available, uses the classic poster art, and has a "coupon price" of $18.12 (YMMV)
I don't automatically object to new art or not using the theatrical release art. But I object to this. Wasn't created by anyone who saw the film.

When this came out a few years back, I thought the exact same thing. There is nothing on that cover that indicates whoever designed it saw the movie. This is one of my all-time favorite classics, and I didn't bother buying this version.

EFNY was shot on film (1981). Most of the vfx were optical composites and not CGI. (even the computer screen animations were created on film) So no upscaling like 2K DI movies.
I've collected Escape on video going back to LaserDisc. (get off my lawn) This is the best version.
