I am using 2 R-41M speakers for rear surround. Considering these for front heights.

Are these best for rear surrounds or front heights?

Due to floor layout, I can't arrange side surround.

I'd just get a set of RP-500 iis. These speakers aren't the greatest for Atmos tracks.

Is there much of a difference between these and the original RP502S?

These are not designed for "height" positions.
They're not really ideal for object based soundtracks either ime.

They are designed more as rear or side surrounds for legacy soundtracks.

The r-41M's would do better. Using them for rear, side, and front heights. These 502's are more for filling out sound in a room, not directional like surround/atmos.

Can you expand on this? I was thinking of replacing my current rears (happen to be Polk 75T towers) with this pair. Is rear surrounds considered legacy? Or will a modern track sound better with a different type of rear speaker?

They are di-polar speakers that fire in opposite direction from a single input. Atmos is object based that "move" the sound across the listening space. You can't move if firing both directions at the same time....

I managed bipolar main LR by definitive technology and Dirac room correction by putting heavy blankets on the back side of the speaker during calibration. Result was incredible. Great for music and atmos was fine. But you are correct. I just had to get creative. I would not recommend these speakers for atmos.

Expanding on pioneer732 post.
It's not the position, it's speaker design.

Legacy codecs are speaker based surround.
Atmos(& DTS:X) are object based surrounds.
Atmos & X rely on legacy positions.

I'll say it's not optimal rather than it can't.
FYI these are actually bi polar designed speakers.

The irony here is that Atmos modules are a design for Atmos!
Height positions are more for the more versatile DTS:X

Keep in mind this is all subjective.
Just look at how often people say "Atmos" soundbars work for them.
Some even goes as far as to say they rival an actual speaker setup!!!

In the end if it works for you then it works.
