Are people reselling these as scrap iron or something?
Also, since dumbbells are "durable goods" that should last a lifetime (i.e., unlike food, clothing, etc), are veteran weightlifters buying these deals (they presumably already have weights so that doesn't make sense) or is it always new exercisers who are buying/upvoting these deals (but how would newbies know to buy dumbbells when they're under $1 per pound)?

Personally, I have cast iron dumbbells which, while functional, are a little rough from use -- rusted and dinged. They also have skinny, straight handles. I have a couple pairs of dumbbells with the chrome handles like these, and I definitely prefer them. So, some people might be replacing ones. Some people are likely new and just outfitting their gyms, and others might be adding additional dumbbells at weights they don't already have. I'm looking for 30s and 35s, the first as replacements and the second as additional ones because I don't want to make a jump from 30 to 40 on some exercises. Then in a few weeks/months, I'll be looking for 45s and 50+, in all likelihood!

I am working on strength training with my running so need them, and the last free weights I had didn't make the cross country trip, so I have to replace them. They were 100 pounds of stuff I didn't want to bring with me, which is why they stayed behind.
