I received the phone last week and it came unlocked
Which phone did you order? And how do you know it came unlocked. Nobody else reported it.

Any way in advance to tell how much RAM the phone has?
4 gb is inadequate even for basic android stuff like occasionally browsing the web. 8 gb is barely enough for a half decent experience. I never had a passable experience until i had 12 gb. What's a bad experience? You switching to another app and the app almost certainly losing its state and has to reload entirely. With insufficient ran this happened to me all the time and drove me crazy. With more ram this happens much less or very rarely.

I think it's going to be 4GB for the US. 6 and 8 are international versions.
4gb is useless 🤪

This is a great insight.
My 72 year old mom mainly uses Youtube and Whatsapp Video Calling, besides calling and texting occasionally.
Do you think the A17 5G with 4Gb ram will suffice for her?
My fear is that if she is using youtube, gets a call and takes it on Whatsapp Video, when she goes back to Youtube the app would have restarted and she cant continue where she left off.
Can 4GB ram cause such a poor experience for a basic user? I have seen reviewers even play games with some stutter - so I am thinking YT and Whatsapp should be ok. Thoughts?
Thank you!
I have the A16 (now my camping/kayaking phone with T-Mo SAT on it) and used a lot of Whatsapp talk and video (daughter out of the US) and never a stutter. Had the Moto G and G Power but the 720 low rez screen and low quality cameras made me appreciate the A16. Also the phone is still getting updates until 2028.

The phone is fine for basic tasks - just don't expect to have multiple things running smoothly at the same time (Google Maps gets a bit glitchy if you're also playing music, etc). For a kids phone or a basic phone that just serves a utility purpose, this is absolutely fine - and unlike Moto's continuous obsolescence, this gets security updates for many years to come. As for the 4GB, it is what it is now thanks to AI data centers - unless you wanna break the bank for a nicer phone, lower end will be short on memory. There's a ramdrive feature to use disk as memory, and that buffers it a little - turn down the animations and it at least feels more responsive.

There is also a lot of speed tweaks for the A16 & A17 on YouTube & Facebook. One of my friends got the A16 and hated it. So I tweaked, and now he is happy with it.. But there are many tweaks you can make. Uninstall or disable bloatware, reduce animations, etc.
